In his production, director Claus Guth dissects this chapter of Russian history like a criminal case, examining how systems of power and oppression, intrigue and violence, continually repeat themselves. Due to the composer's early death, the opera remained unfinished.

The Staatsoper Unter den Linden will perform the score completed by Dmitri Shostakovich, complemented by Igor Stravinsky's striking finale – thus impressively bringing to life a world full of religious fanaticism and political intrigue.
