Since July 2025, the Bröhan Museum has presented the exhibition “The Magic of the Glaze”, which is dedicated to the important Danish ceramic artist Nils Thorsson (1898–1975) and the stoneware department of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Copenhagen.

Thorsson's artistic environment—Danish art ceramics from the 1930s to the 1970s—will also be explored with works by Jais Nielsen, Patrick Nordström, and Axel Salto, among others.

The exhibition introduces visitors to the fascinating world of fine glazes, which, through the interplay of earth and fire, have produced artistic and unique surfaces.

Selected works will be presented, impressively demonstrating the diversity and depth of classical glazes such as celadon, oxblood, and temmoku. The exhibition illustrates how traditional techniques from classical China were reinterpreted and further developed by Nils Thorsson and others. The glazed objects are characterized by their extraordinary depth of color and luminosity, revealing the aesthetic power of ceramic art.

The accompanying book project by collector and ceramics expert Jörg Schwandt delves deeper into the subject and invites visitors to experience the sensual effect of the glazes from a new perspective. Without overly technical explanations, the work introduces visitors to the magic of glazes through vivid descriptions and striking photographs. The exhibition not only offers an art-historical insight but also inspires an intense appreciation of materiality and color.
