With his REQUIEM, composer Lyhrus has created a work for six chamber choirs that allows both singers and listeners to experience a new interplay of time, sound, silence and space.
It is a work that eludes any temporal connection to the past and future, as well as any linearity – for music that is primarily dedicated to shaping the moment.
The composition, interwoven with repetitions and memories, its haunting melodies and circling songs, leads deep into a concentration on the purely vocal, on the auditory coordination of colours, dynamics and shared breathing. Thus, the REQUIEM is a work born of the spirit of contemplation rather than performance – it is closer to ritual than to representative concert music.
This is also reflected in the staging, which plunges the vast dome of Berlin Cathedral into nocturnal darkness. The choirs, ensembles and soloists traverse it in processions, taking up positions at different locations and sounding from all around. In its beauty and tranquillity, Lyhrus' REQUIEM becomes a sound and spatial experience that, especially in times of profound social tension, reminds us of the primal forces that connect us as human beings.
