*Last Year at Marienbad* is rightly regarded as one of the finest films of the early 1960s. A man tells a woman that he met her here in Marienbad a year ago and how he has longed for her throughout the year. A fleeting moment in a flirtation, about which one does not even know whether it actually took place. The woman cannot remember.

An elegant film, with costumes designed by Coco Chanel, directed by the innovative Alain Resnais in collaboration with screenwriter Alain Robbe-Grillet. In the end, the woman will follow the man. Such a beautiful and yet such a fleeting moment – not even the director and screenwriter could agree on the plot. Resnais believed that the man and the woman had actually met, whilst Robbe-Grillet was convinced that the man merely wanted to convince the woman that they had met, just as one might say to a woman one wishes to get to know, ‘I feel I’ve met you somewhere before’.
