the Lichterfelde villa district

Lichterfelde emerged in the 1860s as one of Berlin’s first villa colonies, located at that time far outside the city limits.

Entrepreneur Johann Anton Wilhelm von Carstenn sought to build on the success of the Marienthal villa colony near Hamburg and offer affluent Berliners an escape from the sprawling urban jungle of Berlin: with a charming villa in the countryside and neighbors of their own social standing. The villa colony has retained its charm, with quiet, tree-lined cobblestone streets and stately homes in castle-style and brick Gothic, Art Nouveau, and Neo-Renaissance architecture.

The tour takes you to the finest examples on both sides of Drakestraße.
