To mark the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Berlin Peace Center is presenting the exhibition "A Future Without Nuclear Weapons" with an accompanying program.
In August 1945, the two Japanese cities were destroyed by atomic bombs – hundreds of thousands of people died immediately or from the long-term effects. The horrors of those days serve as a reminder to this day: such a catastrophe must never be repeated.
The eyewitness accounts of the hibakusha – the survivors – make the incomprehensible tangible and illustrate the destructive effects of nuclear weapons. Many of them have dedicated their lives to educating people about and working for a nuclear-free world, leading international dialogues, and raising awareness of peace and disarmament, especially among young people.
