Sixteen-year-old Sebastian is enjoying his teenage years surrounded by woods, fields and the country lanes of a small town: during the day he studies, whilst at night he rounds off the sweltering summer days by the lake with beer and weed, often with his girlfriend. Then, out of the blue, Kolja – who is the same age – joins his family, supposedly the son of a friend of his father’s who has just passed away. The boy immediately captivates everyone. But no one as much as Sebastian.

What follows is an emotional rollercoaster that hurls not only Sebastian but also his family with tremendous force out of their small-town routine. ‘Free at Heart’, directed by rising star Max Hegewald, is an intense coming-of-age drama about a love that breaks all the rules – and about the feelings that nobody wants to admit to, yet which can never be switched off. A bold debut film that will be talked about for a long time to come.
