In the 1950s, the young widow Florence Green opens a bookshop in a conservative English seaside town – sparking a quiet cultural revolution. Despite resistance from the local elite, she finds supporters and brings new literature to the village. But her vision meets with fierce opposition as convention and modernity clash.
A discussion following the film with Carolin Schönle from the neighborhood bookshop "Der Divan" will provide an opportunity to talk about this subtly filmed adaptation of Penelope Fitzgerald's novel "The Bookshop."
