On Justice #8

The eighth edition of the HAU discourse series “On Justice” focuses on the debate surrounding the potential and limitations of legalising ecological issues. What challenges does the implementation of the idea of “rights of nature” entail, which calls for the recognition of ecosystems such as rivers and forests as legal entities? What prospects do these rights open up for a more just relationship between humans and nature?

In addition, the law as an instrument for climate and environmental justice will also be examined:

prominent lawyer and judge Roda Verheyen, legal anthropologist Christina Hernandez Hurtado and plaintiff Parid Ridwanuddin will describe their experiences with environmental lawsuits and discuss their implementation.

Sociologist Nikolaj Schultz contextualises the legal struggles into broader ecological fights against geo-social exploitation. Miriam Saage-Maaß, lawyer and Legal Director of the ECCHR (European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights), has been consulting HAU for the whole focus and will moderate the evening.
