Ballerinas were meant to evoke ethereal, supernatural beings beyond the human… To have conspicuously large breasts or hips is to disrupt this fantasy with grotesque sexuality and remind the audience that one is, in fact, human.” The Guardian 2018
En de hort: (ballet term) to move outward, to go out, outside. En Dewh*re: a grotesque and sexual creature, an outsider.
While researching why she couldn't perform a perfect pirouette after years of ballet training, performance artist Rebecca Kenny inadvertently discovered one of the dark sides of professional dance. This included quotes like the one above, as well as comments from dancers seeking advice on how to disfigure themselves so that shame about their bodies would prevent them from dancing.
The solo performance piece En Dewh*re is a response to these realizations.
A creature roams the stage, a writhing mass of breasts contemplating its body, it is angry—it is the En Dewh*re.
