Shattered Reality: Edgar Arceneaux and the Violence of Visibility
With Shards, 68projects presents the first solo exhibition in Berlin by U.S. artist Edgar Arceneaux (1972, Los Angeles) during Berlin Art Week 2025.
The exhibition brings together newly created “skinned mirrors” — works in which Edgar Arceneaux painstakingly removes the reflective metal layer from used mirrors in a labor-intensive, physically demanding process, and transfers it onto canvas.
What remains are fragile surfaces suspended between shine and decay — disturbingly beautiful and hauntingly material. Exposure to humidity and the surrounding environment causes the mirrors to “live.” Over the course of the exhibition, they will change — until the artist halts this process and “fixes” them, stopping time itself.
The mirrors lose their function, the self-image collapses, and space opens for urgent questions about identity, power, and visibility. Arceneaux reflects on deep political fractures within U.S. society — from deportations by ICE (United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to police violence — while drawing connections to current realities in Berlin.
On opening night, the artist will present a performance that expands his visual practice through live action.
