With "Berlin Odd Wisdom", the uruguayan drummer has gathered around him a very special selection of Berlin musicians. The formation has existed since 2019 and has since developed itsvery own sound. The pieces composed especially for this formation create a modern synthesis of European and Latin American aesthetics.
The rhythmic concept of Pinera's compositions is based on the clave principle and is transferred in a virtuoso manner by Pinera into the world of odd time signatures. In addition, there is the harmonic understanding of jazz with its large space for improvisation, which allows each musician to add his personality and sound as an important ingredient to the formation.
Pinera's first document with this new musical approach was released in 2021. The album "Odd Wisdom" was recorded in New York with Donny McCaslin, Scott Colley and Ben Monder and was included in the list of Grammy Nominees 2021. However, the Berlin band is now continuing this development. While the album production shows a strong influence of a US jazz, the Berlin formation now expands the music with the influence of European classical modernism. Above all, the work of Béla Bartók currently plays a leading role in Pinera's compositions. A first live session, which also adds a string quartet to the formation, can already be found on YouTube.
Diego Pinera, was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, but left the country in his early teens to begin his studies at Berklee in Boston. He attracted particular attention in 2017 when he won the ECHO Jazz award for Best Instrumentalist National with his album My Picture feat. Mark Turner & Ben Street.
Since 2017, his collaborations with renowned jazz musicians* from the USA have intensified, with his latest and current album Odd Wisdom being recorded with Donny McCaslin, Ben Monder andScott Colley. In 2021, the album was officially included in the Grammy selection. He teaches at the University Of Music Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden.
Igor Osypov, is with his guitar both as a sideman and as a band leader part in a number of major jazz festivals and events around the globe such as NPR Tiny Desk, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Montreaux Jazz Festival and others. He won awards in many different contests in Europe such as Montauban Jazz, Smietana jazz guitar competition and Jazz nad Odra. Peter Ehwald is well known in the german jazz scene. He writes and performs music, along the tangency of Jazz and contemporary music.
With his approach to rhythm rooted in the Jazz tradition, he uses unusual instrumentations and modern concepts of harmony to project the “here and now” in his energetic and yet elegiac improvisations.Marcel Krömker won several prizes at Jugend jazzt and Jugend musiziert as a youth. He studied bass at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and at the Jazz Institut Berlin. He took courses with Avishai Cohen, Bobby McFerrin, John Ruocco, Joey Baron, Kenny Werner and John Scofield, among others. He is equally on the road as a composer and sideman.
