By Bertolt Brecht

As she fled, she became increasingly angry at the end of which she was put before a court because the Governor's wife wanted to get her child back. Times have changed again, now the child is the heritage of a great fortune. But just before the old rule has a firm grip on the reins, there is a short period of anarchy in which the judge Azdak reigns. His judges are feared by the rich and a blessing to the poor. Thus, in the event that the biological but heartless mother reclaims her child, he reinvents the Salomonian chalk circle.
The question which is being dealt with here is of as great simplicity as political urgency: to whom does the world belong? It is therefore no coincidence that Bertolt Brecht, as the Berlin ensemble in 1954 finally allowed the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm to play, first staged the Caucasian Chalk Circle.

Michael Thalheimer will work regularly as a house director at the Berliner Ensemble. His previous productions are documented in numerous talks, texts and photos in the new book by Hans-Dieter Schütt "Michael Thalheimer".
