Ulrike Ottinger and Dana von Suffrin in conversation with Selma Jahnke.

At Schöneberg Town Hall, filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger and Dana von Suffrin, winner of the 2025 Chamisso Prize, talk to literary scholar Selma Jahnke about origins, being a stranger, and the productive tension between travelling and staying put.

The conversation is centred on the work of poet Adelbert von Chamisso (1781–1838), whose experience of being an outsider continues to impact society today, offering new insights into identity, language, and cultural belonging.

Through a dialogue between literature and film, Chamisso's poetic legacy is explored further as an expedition of text and image, and an investigation of the past, the future, security and vastness.

Ulrike Ottinger's film Chamissos Schatten (Chamisso's Shadow, 2016) and Dana von Suffrin's novel Nochmal von vorne (Starting Over, 2024) provide the basis for reflections on travel as artistic and existential experiences.
