Cellulose: From nano to macro – an unusual look at fibres and materials

Alexander Helmbrecht and Felicitas von Usslar are researchers at the Technical University of Munich's Chair of Biogenic Polymers. In their projects, they are breaking new ground with cellulose and offering insights into the exciting world of materials research.


In their workshop, they focus on cellulose and its properties. They take their audience on a short journey, from the structure and extraction of the raw material to new areas of application, with brief detours into history and artistic requirements that convey where ancient knowledge and modern techniques meet in research.  


Many exhibits, such as pure pulp, wood, delignified wood and end products such as cellulose films, cottonide and paper, provide direct access to the processes and products discussed. The material cottonide is then presented in more detail. Although made entirely of cellulose, it has the properties of a hard plastic. Its impressive strength makes this historically known material a sustainable building material of the future.


Following the lecture, the materials mentioned will be on display for visitors to touch. An optical microscope will be available on site for visitors to examine different types of paper, allowing them to see the different structures for themselves and making the differences tangible. The speakers will be happy to answer any questions about processes and everyday science and look forward to inspiring visitors with their curiosity for sustainable solutions.
