Painter of Berlin

In a good 30 years of painting, the painter Carsten Kaufhold has dealt with the appearance of the city in which he was born with rare perseverance and concentration. Berlin plays the leading role in his mostly cheerful and clearly structured vedute.

Kaufhold did not focus on the often-used sights such as the television tower or the Brandenburg Gate.
The painter focused his gaze on the marginalised side streets, suburbs, traffic routes and wastelands that lie beyond the tourist streams.

Carsten Kaufhold was an out-of-time painter of the late 20th and early 21st century. His Berlin does not pulsate, does not radiate hecticness or speed.

In the bright glow of the sun, Berlin presents itself as a glistening place - but without aiming for a kitschy transfiguration.

The exhibition brings together around 60 paintings and drawings that cover all of the painter's major creative phases.
