Der Doktor kehrt heim

Film concert with the METROPOLIS ORCHESTER BERLIN, Dieter Kosslick and Knut Elstermann.

Robert Wiene's DAS CABINET DES DR.CALIGARI is the epitome of expressionist film and, at the same time, its ultimate pinnacle. Created in 1920 in the studios of the Filmstadt Weißensee, it is an expression of its time, a work of art reflecting on war and the post-war period.

The original music by Giuseppe Becce (1920) contributed significantly to the film's breakthrough after the premiere with different music had initially met with little success. Becce's music was reconstructed in the 1980s.

With the help of the Düsseldorf Film Museum, conductor Burkhard Götze was able to locate this music and re-edit it. Richard Siedhoff has synchronised it perfectly with the Murnau Foundation's new 4K|Ultra HD restoration.

Not far from where the film was made, at what is now Caligariplatz, this music is now experiencing its Berlin premiere with the Metropolis Orchester Berlin under Burkhard Götze. Film patron and Berlinale veteran Dieter Kosslick will give a special insight intopersonal relationship with Caligari in conversation with Knut Elstermann.

Cinema legend Armin Mueller-Stahl has taken on the patronage of this project.
