exhibition

In three chapters, the exhibition uses archive material to ask: Who were the main characters in the drama school's history(s) in the first ten years between the school's founding and the construction of the Wall? Which plays were performed? And how free were the stages of the GDR for the students?

With this first of a total of three exhibitions in the "Dramaturgies of an Archive" project, the new production archive of the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts comes into the spotlight.

The exhibition was curated by Krystian Koziol, Paula Engel and Johanna Stapelfeldt.

About the exhibition:

Studio productions of the State Drama School between the school's founding and the construction of the Wall, 1951 to 1961.

Autumn 1951. Founding of the State Drama School.

This means: separation from the German Theater, the legacy of Max Reinhardt, moving FROM THE CENTER TO THE EDGE of the city.

At the new location there are factories and workers, but neither a stage nor a prop room. The first generation of actors in the GDR therefore only made their debut IN A NEW WAY when they finished their studies.

They were looking for new ways to reach the audience: for example, on the road on a theater tour through the provinces.
