Over two weekends in August, the Box Office Around the World festival presents six current cinema productions that are audience successes and box office hits in their countries of origin, but have not yet been seen on the big screen in Germany.

Together with representatives of the Berlin communities from Thailand, Argentina, Nigeria, Vietnam, Brazil and India and the curator Dorothee Wenner, the films were selected and an accompanying programme developed. Before the open-air screenings, a thematic spotlight – with a star-studded line-up – will be directed at each film.

Gohan - Chayanop Boonprakob, Atta Hemwadee, Baz Poonpiriya / Thailand 2026

In the film’s opening scene, Gohan is still a white ball of fluff with a pink nose, wandering all alone outside a 7-Eleven in Chonburi. A lonely Japanese manager, on the verge of retirement, takes the dog home with him. He gives Gohan the most wonderful childhood a puppy could ever wish for, and is richly rewarded for it. But happiness is fleeting. As an adult dog, a brave Burmese migrant rescues him from the clutches of an animal abuser; together, the two fugitives flee to Bangkok. Although Namcha is deported from there and Gohan is left to fend for himself once more – the Burmese woman has achieved a victory. In the third episode, Gohan is an elderly dog who is ‘adopted’ at the station by a young Thai artist couple. He returns the favour and, through his presence and wise nature, shows the somewhat confused couple the way to happiness in love…

The stylistically very different episodes were directed by three Thai filmmakers. What unites them, apart from the four-legged ‘lead’, is their interest in the astonishing effects dogs can have on humans: a film to make you cry and laugh! The life story of a dog captivated Thai audiences so thoroughly that GOHAN became the box-office hit of the year (and its star, in adulthood, became a TikTok sensation!)
