Berlin East - An expedition to the vanished GDR

A new country with a new socialist people also needed a new capital city. So the leadership got to work, radically transforming East Berlin, the capital of the GDR. Modern representative buildings, like those in the Stalinallee (Stalin Avenue), as well as the ubiquitous pre fabricated apartment blocks for the masses, shot into the air with dizzying speed. These remnants of socialist central planning are still definitive in the atmosphere of the former East Berlin.

From Prenzlauer Berg, this bike tour first leads to Ernst Thälmann, who is one of the last great socialist monuments to hold his ground. The sports forum and the Stasi prison in Hohenschönhausen are further destinations on the tour.

The tour also visits the Stasi headquarters, from where 80,000 informers of the GDR regime were controlled for deployment not only in East Berlin but throughout the entire GDR.

The bicycle tour through East Berlin takes 3,5 hours and is about 15 to 20 kilometres long.
