Avatar – for over two decades, these Swedish metal visionaries have been exploring the dark soul of alternative and melodic death metal – with unwavering creativity and growing global success.
With their 2023 album "Dance Devil Dance," the band not only made the devil dance, but also their worldwide fan base: chart positions in numerous countries and a top-ten spot in the UK rock charts speak for themselves. The single "The Dirt I'm Buried In" finally marked their final breakthrough in North America – reaching number 1 in the US Billboard rock charts.
Their 2022 and 2023 tours led them to sold-out venues and culminated in the 1,000th live concert of their career – a milestone that underscores their standing as one of the most exceptional live bands in the metal cosmos.
Avatar's primary goal was never hits – but rather the consistent development of their complex sound. "Dance Devil Dance" thus increasingly emphasized hard rock elements – for example, in the duet with Lzzy Hale of Halestorm – without denying its deep roots in metal.
The band's name says it all: An avatar, the appearance of a divine being in human form, aptly describes how singer Johannes Eckerström and his bandmates see themselves – as shape-shifters of metal, transcending all genre boundaries. Since their debut "Thoughts Of No Tomorrow" (2006), they have continued to expand their style – from the dark industrial of "Hunter Gatherer" (2020) to the accessible heaviness of "Dance Devil Dance."
Avatar is currently working in Gothenburg on their tenth studio album, again produced by Jay Ruston. This time, dreams and their interpretations are the focus – translated into songs that, according to Eckerström, are "the most rhythmically intricate and at the same time catchiest" in the band's history.
The bottom line: Avatar remain unpredictable – and that's precisely what makes them so fascinating.
