“Eyes on Concrete” and “Six Steps Up” – a dual exhibition by Janine Baumeister

The dual exhibition "AUF AUGENHÖHE" brings together perspectives on people who play an active role in shaping society but often receive little public attention. The presentations invite visitors to bring these perspectives to light and give them a platform.

The series kicks off with “AUGEN AUF BETON.” The exhibition focuses on construction workers in Berlin whose labor shapes the city’s daily life, yet who themselves often remain in the background. Through photographic and film portraits, they are brought to light—not as anonymous laborers, but as people with individual stories. The focus is on themes such as background, daily work life, pride, prejudice, and solidarity on construction sites. Film producer Janine Baumeister deliberately approaches those portrayed on an equal footing and places their perspectives at the center.

This is followed by “SIX STEPS UP.” For this project, Janine Baumeister traveled with a small team through countries in the Western Balkans and profiled young activists. The focus is on people who are committed to democracy, climate protection, social justice, and social cohesion. The works tell stories of personal dedication, conviction, and the attempt to initiate social change even under difficult conditions.
