There are many ways to interpret current events and find meaning in the past – but how can we predict the future? In many traditions, the future is read from a coffee cup. It all begins with making and drinking coffee together.

Whilst waiting for the coffee grounds to dry, people share fruit or sweets, swap stories and have a natter. When the cup is finally ready, the reader recognises within it the intertwined events of the present, obscure connections and a glimpse of the future that one hopes to foresee.
Building on Susan Hiller’s long-standing interest in popular culture and folk beliefs, the coffee-ground reading begins with a brief introduction to the artist’s work, followed by communal coffee sessions and fortune-telling sessions with a coffee-ground reader.
