Invitation to the awards ceremony and exhibition opening for this year’s art competition in the categories of photography, film and collage. Over a glass of sparkling wine and seltzer, the winners’ works will be presented and awarded prizes, accompanied by an opening speech by Mykola Ridnyi*.

This year’s art competition is themed:

But … is it true that hope is dead?

It is the epitaph of the Spanish writer, anarchist and co-founder of the organisation Mujeres Libres, Lucía Sánchez Saornil. For 90 years ago, right-wing nationalists and sections of the military staged a coup against the democratically elected government of the Second Spanish Republic. Thousands of volunteers from all over the world came to Spain to defend the Republic. Now in its eleventh year, the art competition is dedicated to the Spanish Civil War and to questions of memory, resistance and hope in times of anti-democratic tendencies.

*Mykola Ridnyi is a Ukrainian artist, curator and lecturer based in Berlin. In his films, video installations and photographs, he explores war, violence, memory and social conflicts. His works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Kyiv Biennale and the Venice Biennale. From 2023 to 2026, he taught at the Berlin University of the Arts.
