Duke Ellington’s ‘Three Black Kings’ was composed in 1974 for the Dance Theatre of Harlem and also serves as a tribute to the civil rights activist and Baptist preacher Martin Luther King, who was assassinated in 1968. Andile Khumalo’s ‘The Light We Carry’, which premiered in 2025, recalls often-overlooked stories and voices from Africa – quiet, intense and haunting.
Finally, ‘Techno Utopia’ by Rob Laidlaw – a world premiere for orchestra, piano, synthesiser and newly developed adaptive instruments – weaves together a musical patchwork of hundreds of quotations, samples and personal memories.
