Motherhood—a theme that runs through numerous art-historical biographies of women, yet is rarely examined in detail.

In the biographies of many Bauhaus female photographers, it is expressed in a matter-of-fact yet life-changing sentence, such as: “With the birth of her daughter that same year, she ended her photographic career.” One exception is Lony Neumann, who left her husband and their child and emigrated to another country. Examples like these demonstrate what has always been true: the personal is always political.
These life stories prompt us to reflect on motherhood today: How can motherhood and one’s own artistic practice be reconciled in a system where care work receives little recognition, where “lifestyle part-time” is the talk of the town, and where female artists continue to struggle for visibility compared to their male colleagues? And how do these discourses find their way into museums?
