TJ Ballantyne's pub “The Old Oak” is the last place in the former mining village in northeast England where people can meet. When Syrian refugees are housed in the empty houses, the young Syrian woman Yara befriends the pub owner, and they create a shared space for refugees and long-time residents, where free food is cooked for everyone. But not everyone in the village is happy about this...

In what is likely to be his last film, director Ken Loach once again tells of the power of solidarity and the hope that solidarity and charity can defeat xenophobia and racism.
