Black Smoker is Julian Charrière's sixth solo exhibition at the DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM gallery, which he transforms into a deep black sensory universe. In almost complete darkness, Black Smoker opens up access to a world that otherwise remains invisible to us: the deep sea, a living habitat that is increasingly being shaped by human influences.

Sound and vibration allow visitors to experience the physical and acoustic presence of these extreme landscapes, a poetic space between geological reality and artistic imagination. Charrière shows that even the darkest zones of the deep sea have long been crisscrossed by human traces, and invites visitors not only to reflect through sensory experiences, but also to feel an emotional connection to these habitats, because only in this way, it seems, can responsibility be experienced.
Charrière's work opens up a poetic and at the same time critical perspective on climate, resources, and our role within this hidden cosmos.

Black Smoker takes visitors into the mysterious depths of the ocean, where volcanic forces and hydrothermal vents create a dark, overwhelming world. Sound installations simulate the seismic energy of these underwater landscapes, creating a sensory and intense experience.
In the second exhibition room, Charrière presents the work Spiral Economy, a sculptural vending machine that reflects on the limits of the exploitation of nature and the significance of geological time. Also on display for the first time are new photographs from his series Midnight Zone, which document the endangered marine ecosystem of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone.

The exhibition is an intense appeal to reconsider the fragile balance of our environment and to understand our relationship with the sea as a vulnerable habitat.
