The mood among the Kafkas is cheerful: his mother is relieved by Franz's weight gain in the sanatorium, and his father proudly reads his reports from the family's asbestos factory.

Franz dutifully fulfills expectations – at least outwardly. In truth, his thoughts revolve solely around writing, which he seems to be even less successful at than his role as a son.

He finds distraction in visits to brothels with Max, who now also wants to invite his cousin Felice from Berlin.
