More courage for democracy education? Political education in times of authoritarian promises
Democracy education is on everyone's lips - but what exactly does it mean? Growing scepticism about democracy, the rise of authoritarian parties and the spread of disinformation are making it increasingly clear that democracy cannot simply be taken for granted as the basis of modern cultural and educational work, but must be taught and strengthened in a targeted manner.
Museums, memorials and other public institutions are responding by explicitly naming democracy as an educational mission. However, this mission often remains vague. What understandings of democracy underlie educational work? How do institutions meet the expectations and challenges in an increasingly polarized environment without freezing in the rhetoric of neutrality? And last but not least: What is the future of democracy education in the face of shrinking funding in the cultural and educational sector?
The Willy Brandt Talk 2025 is dedicated to these questions and discusses what democracy education can achieve today - and where it reaches its limits.
The panelists are Federal Education Minister Karin Prien, Lale Yildirim, Professor of History Education at Kiel University, Axel Drecoll, Director of the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation, and Tilda Skerra, spokesperson for the Brandenburg State Student Council. The event will be hosted by Harald Asel from rbb24 Inforadio.
