Outrageous women: Chansons and stories about the seemingly weaker sex

Weaker sex? No way! "What men can do, we've been able to do for a long time – and perhaps a whole lot more!" blared the great Berlin comedian Claire Waldoff in 1926.

Claire was an "icon of the unconventional," rebelliously singing about feminism, free love, and the free life – but not as a vamp for men's fantasies, but rather as a genuinely feminine, self-confident woman.

Women are presented who had or have something to say, who continue to survive in art – from yesterday to today.

From Friedrich Hollaender's cycle "Songs of a Poor Girl" to Hilde Knef and Fifi Brix. Unknown, unheard-of women also have their say.

It's time for women to finally be who they feel comfortable being – on an equal footing with men.

It's astonishing that a man, of all people, once wrote feminist chansons for Claire Waldoff. "What men can do, we've been able to do for a long time..." Friedrich Hollaender rhymed and composed. He was a keen observer of his time. In his songs, he presents a wide variety of girls and women, thus providing a historical document of their social situation and development.

And on stage today?
Tal Balshai & Jeannette Urzendowsky are playing together as a male/female duo.
