Reri and Matahi are a young couple living happily on a remote South Sea island. But their love turns to tragedy when Reri is chosen as the sacred virgin of her people's gods and thus becomes taboo for all men. The two lovers flee their island to a pearl trading town. There, Matahi works as a pearl diver. But even here, Reri and Matahi are not safe...
The screenplay was written by F. W. Murnau together with two experienced documentary filmmakers, Robert J. Flaherty (NANUK, THE ESKIMO) and Edgar G. Ulmer (MENSCHEN AM SONNTAG).
Due to differences regarding the staging, Flaherty left the project during filming.
Using his private fortune, exclusively amateur actors, and original locations in Bora Bora and Tahiti, Murnau realized his last film, the love drama TABU, exactly as he had envisioned it.
However, Murnau did not live to see the film's premiere on March 18, 1931. The director died a few days earlier as a result of a car accident.
At the 1931 Academy Awards, TABU won the award for Best Cinematography (Floyd Crosby and Robert J. Flaherty).

The Mighty Wurlitzer theater organ at the Musical Instrument Museum is one of the largest instruments of its kind still in existence in Europe.
In 1929, Werner Ferdinand von Siemens, the grandson of the company's founder, purchased it from the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company in North Tonawanda, NY. It has four manuals, 1,228 pipes, and more than 200 stops. In addition, there is a large number of percussion and effect instruments. Thunder rumblings and birds chirping, sirens wailing and bells ringing – the Mighty Wurlitzer's sound palette is impressive.
- Organ music: Jörg Joachim Riehle
