Free admission for every child and two favourite adults
The Hamburger Bahnhof and Volkswagen Group welcome winter with a special weekend of activities for children, young people and families: participatory tours of the current presentations, creative workshops directly in the exhibitions, pop-up studios throughout the museum and continuous opportunities for self-discovery invite young and old alike to linger, create and marvel on Saturday, 29th and Sunday, 30th November 2026.
For two days, visitors can not only view art, but also actively participate in its creation. Participatory tours through all current exhibitions allow art to be experienced in a new way. In a workshop, winter greetings are created on postcards from the Hamburger Bahnhof, which can be sent directly on site. In the Rieckhallen studio, children build their own shadow figures in a puppet workshop, which are then brought to life on a small stage.
Admission to the Hamburger Bahnhof is always free for children and young people under the age of 18. During the action weekend, they can also bring two favourite adults with them free of charge.
Programme:
Sat 29 Nov and Sun 30 Nov, every hour from 12 noon to 4 pmParticipatory family tours (approx. 60 mins each)
12 noon Petrit Halilaj; 1 pm Infinite Exhibition; 2 pm Klára Hosnedlová; 3 pm Delcy Morelos; 4 pm Toyin Ojih Odutola
Participatory tours invite visitors to actively engage their minds, ask questions and contribute their own perspectives. Material samples from Klára Hosnedlová, a mini portrait exercise on Toyin Ojih Odutola, the experience of scent and colour in Delcy Morelos, the changing perspectives in the Infinite Exhibition, and the joint exploration of memories and stories in Petrit Halilaj's poetic room installations create a lively dialogue that deepens and individually enriches the museum experience.
Sat 29 Nov and Sun 30 Nov, ongoing from 12 noon to 5 pm
Drop-in workshops: Four open creative studios in the exhibitions In the studios accompanying the current exhibitions in the Rieckhallenatelier, visitors can get creative in a variety of ways. Inspired by Klára Hosnedlová, the photo performance using upcycled textiles creates a play with form, material and self-expression – cutting, gluing, stapling, staging and photographing. Toyin Ojih Odutola focuses on drawing: expressive mini-portraits are created on tinted paper using coloured pencils and pencils. Delcy Morelos encourages the use of natural pigments such as umber, sienna, cocoa and cinnamon on wooden postcards to create fragrant little objects. Finally, in the Infinite Exhibition, the reclining studio invites visitors to view architecture and ceilings from an unusual perspective and capture them in drawings.
Pop-up studio ‘Seasons Greetings’ (Historical Hall) At the interactive writing and drawing station in the museum's Historical Hall, you can design your own winter postcards. Each card becomes a small work of art that captures your thoughts and the atmosphere of the museum. Send them to friends and family or leave them at the museum for others to reply to. This creates a creative dialogue between visitors. Come by, get creative and send a special message to the world!
‘Your Voice in the Museum’ (Hamburger Bahnhof Forum)In the Hamburger Bahnhof Forum, interviews with visitors, artists and people connected to the museum are shown on several monitors. Listen to what they have to say, and then it's your turn! Speak into the camera and answer the same questions – spontaneously, in your own way. Your contribution can become part of the existing interviews – a growing collection of voices, thoughts and moments.
Screen printing station in the Rieckhallenatelier
Winter clothes already stowed away – but the shirts and bags look boring? Then come to the open screen printing studio for the whole family! Bring your own clothes or bags and give them a new look with colour, imagination and your own designs. Just come by, join in and print!
Museum shadows
Theatre at the Rieckhallenstudio Inspired by Petrit Halilaj's exhibition, participants immerse themselves in the fascinating world of shadow theatre: under the guidance of puppeteer Georg Jenisch, they create their own shadow figures from simple materials and discover the art of their mobility. Through the creative use of different light sources, lively, poetic images and small scenes between abstraction and narrative are created. A sensual and experimental offering that makes the exhibitions artistically tangible.
Ask me Family
Everything you always wanted to know but never got to ask on a guided tour, you can ask the people with the ‘Ask me’ sign in the exhibitions. Just talk to them – they will answer your questions and, if you wish, accompany you through the rooms. Whether children or adults: all questions are welcome!
Workshop ‘Ich versteh nur Bahnhof’ (I don't understand a word) (National Gallery. A 21st century collection)
The workshop invites families and children to discover the free accompanying book ‘Ich versteh nur Bahnhof’ in a playful way. With pictures, stories and lots of imagination, it takes you on a journey through the world of art and the museum. Creative ideas from the book are taken up and put into practice.
Bloomberg App@kids
For those who like to explore independently with their mobile phones, the Hamburger Bahnhof offers a digital children's tour on the Bloomberg Connects app. Exciting questions, audio clips and creative tasks invite you to discover the museum on your own – best to start right at the museum entrance. An interactive experience for the whole family.
