On two weekends in August, the Schlüterhof becomes a meeting place for film enthusiasts from all over the world – with summery drinks and snacks. The open-air festival presents six current cinema productions that are box office hits in their countries of origin but have not yet been shown on the big screen in Germany. Over two weekends in August, the Box Office Around the World festival presents six current cinema productions that are audience successes and box office hits in their countries of origin, but have not yet been seen on the big screen in Germany.
Together with representatives of the Berlin communities from Thailand, Argentina, Nigeria, Vietnam, Brazil and India and the curator Dorothee Wenner, the films were selected and an accompanying programme developed. Before the open-air screenings, a thematic spotlight – with a star-studded line-up – will be directed at each film.
Velhos Bandidos / Brasilien 2026
Nancy works for a cruise line and has access to passenger data: the perfect setup for breaking into their homes while the owners are away! Together with her mate Sid, she gains access to Rodolfo and Marta’s house. But the cool burglars hadn’t reckoned on their victims were, in a way, just waiting for them: the pensioners need accomplices for a bank robbery they’ve carefully planned; after all, Rodolfo, as an architect, once built the very bank they’re planning to enter…
‘Heist movies’ are currently considered the most popular genre, so the success of “Velhos Bandidos” came as no surprise, especially as director Cláudio Torres was able to cast top stars of Brazilian cinema for his film. Fernanda Montenegro shines as Ary Fontoura’s wife, embodying criminal aristocracy from whom her somewhat punkish counter-duo, Bruna Marquezine and Vladimir Brichta, still have much to learn.
Anyone wishing to learn about the spirals of corruption in Brazil should not miss this film!
