‘Tausendschönchen’ is another name for daisies. And these daisies are the giggling accomplices Marie I and Marie II. They agree that the world has gone bad, and for that very reason they want to be bad themselves.

And so, like Flower Power girls, they merrily roam through Prague, making a mockery of everything that is sacred to middle-class society: stiff suits, formal dinners and a 9 to 5 job. It all culminates in a riotous food fight, during which the friends wreak havoc at a banquet for party officials. This irreverent carnival of excess was the antithesis of the state ideology, which glorified workers’ productivity and promised them a bright future. *A Thousand Little Daisies* was banned for its portrayal of hedonism and food wastage.

The feminist film director Věra Chytilová was the most prominent representative of the Czech ‘New Wave’, which emerged in the 1960s and to which *Tausendschönchen* also belongs.
