Book presentation with Neil Gregor

With his book The Symphony Concert in Nazi Germany (2025), Neil Gregor presents a social and cultural history of concert attendance in Nazi Germany. Based on previously untapped archive holdings from orchestras across Germany, the author examines how the classical concert scene changed and describes the cultural life of Germans under the conditions of the dictatorship - also from the perspective of the audience.

Gregor comes to the conclusion that the concert hall was not a place of retreat. Instead, he shows how the concert scene was incorporated into the framework of nationalism, racism and militarism of the Nazi regime through countless measures in order to secure its place in the cultural cosmos of National Socialist Germany.
