BERNHARD PLAGG, RAPHAEL MENTZEN & JACOBUS GLADZIWA
Brilliant, lyrical and virtuosic – this concert showcases the trumpet in all its facets: as a festive Baroque instrument, as a romantic singer and as a brilliant solo instrument of the 20th century.
Trumpeters Bernhard Plagg and Raphael Mentzen from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, accompanied by Jaconus Gladziwa on the piano, present a varied programme alternating between duets and solo pieces.
Petronio Franceschini's Sonata in D major unfolds the splendour of two trumpets in the festive sound of Italian Baroque. In Oskar Böhmen's ‘Entsagung’ and Theodor Hoch's ‘Eine Perle im Ozean’ op. 30, the trumpet reveals itself as a singing, expressive solo instrument. In Herbert L. Clarke's lively duet ‘Cousins’, the two musicians engage in a brilliant, humorous dialogue. George Enescu's “Légende” leads into a poetic world of sound full of nuances and passion, before Carl Höhne's ‘Slavische Fantasie’ inspires with its dance-like fire and melodic verve.
The programme concludes with Jean-Baptiste Arban's famous variations on the ‘Carnival of Venice’ – a sparkling showpiece full of virtuosity and joy.
