The altarpiece in transition
The first painted images placed on altars date back to the early 13th century. Over time, however, their appearance changed: frames were added to structure them, they acquired hinged wings, and the gold background against which the sacred events once unfolded was replaced by painted landscapes. Martin Hanßen explains these developments using selected examples.
Simply art? What is the appeal of the Old Masters? What stories do they tell in their paintings across the ages? How can their messages be deciphered? Discuss details of the exhibited works as well as their historical context. Topics change weekly.
