The closure of the sector borders and the start of construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961 marked a permanent turning point during the Cold War. Since the end of the Second World War, the question of German unity or final division has been a constant point of contention both in Germany and between the two superpowers, the USA and the Soviet Union.
