What is probably the most beautiful love story in the GDR is interpreted as a sensual mixture of theatre, live music and puppetry. Rike Schuberty embodies the single saleswoman Paula, who fights unconditionally for her happiness. A woman from the common people, who is allowed to speak as she does, who is allowed to know what she knows, who is old enough not to have any doubts about her great love. She accompanies herself with the guitar and thus interprets the hits of the film live, made famous by the PUHDYS. Paul and Paula was and is a cult.
In 1973, 50 years ago, three million people saw the film in a short space of time. It reflected the lifestyle of an entire generation. Both the film and the play are an entertaining reflection on love, adaptation and the contradiction between ideal and reality.
