On the first Sunday of Advent 2025, the Kantorei am Weinberg invites you to a special "Advent Oratorio." Three cantatas by J.S. Bach will be performed: "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" (Now Come, Savior of the Heathens) BWV 61 and "Schwingt freudig Euch empor" (Flipping Joyfully Up) BWV 36, as well as the festive highlight, the first cantata, "Jauchzet, frohlocket" (Rejoice, Rejoice) from the Christmas Oratorio BWV 248/1.
Especially at the beginning of Advent, the focus is not on Christmas itself, but on the "advenire"—the coming. The theme of the imminent arrival of Jesus Christ pervades all three works.
The Advent cantatas BWV 61 and 36 are closely linked by the chorales "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" (Now Come, Savior of the Heathens) and "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern" (How Beautifully Shines the Morning Star), which express the Advent cry of longing.
The result is a spiritual panorama that evokes the tension of anticipation, culminating in the ever-popular "Jauchzet, frohlocket" (Rejoice, rejoice) from the first Christmas Oratorio cantata – an ideal prelude to the Advent season in the authentic soundscape of the Baroque St. Sophia Church.
