As part of Reframe Namibia – Tracing Stories, Julia Runge presents images from her new, ongoing work Namibia's Black Gold for the first time, in which she examines the conditions of charcoal production in Namibia.

Charcoal is considered black gold in Namibia – a lucrative export commodity that mainly finds its way onto European barbecue shelves. Supermarket chains such as ALDI and EDEKA promote the charcoal as sustainable and receive ‘Sustainability Awards’ for doing so. But behind this supposedly green success story lie problematic working conditions, health risks and exploitative structures in Namibian production.

The exhibition will also feature selected works by the Reframe Namibia collective, young graduates of a photography masterclass in Windhoek.
