At the Erlöserkirche in Berlin-Rummelsburg, the audience can look forward to an evening of music featuring key works by Johann Sebastian Bach that bring together various facets of his sacred music.

The program features the cantata “Aus der Tiefen ruf ich, Herr, zu dir” (BWV 131), an early work of great expressiveness that musically distills existential themes such as lament, hope, and trust. The program is complemented by the double-choir motet “Der Geist hilft unsrer Schwachheit auf” (BWV 226), which, with its complex structure and sonic density, ranks among Bach’s most impressive choral works.

A special focus is placed on the Mass in G minor (BWV 235), one of the so-called Lutheran Masses, which are limited to the Kyrie and Gloria. In this work, Bach combines a flowing, elegiac Kyrie with a virtuosic Gloria, unusually set in a minor key. The arias contained within create a calm, meditative atmosphere and lend the composition a special emotional depth.
