The Stressed-Out City – How Do We Survive the Flood of Stimuli?
How does life in the city shape our inner balance—and does it make us sick or perhaps even more resilient? Host Siham El-Maimouni discusses this in the eighth episode of the radio3 Atelier Talk with stress researcher Mazda Adli and artist Marie Salcedo.
Prof. Dr. med. Mazda Adli, Chief Physician at the Fliedner Clinic Berlin and Head of the Affective Disorders Research Unit at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, CCM, at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, investigates how city life affects mental health. Adli examines dense urban development, constant stimulation, and social pressure—as well as the question of what cities can do to help people better cope with these stresses.
Marie Salcedo’s ceramic work “Who is ruling our dreams?” offers a counterpoint to the density of urban stimuli. One can immerse oneself in the work and literally dive into it—it opens up a quiet space where perception slows down and thoughts take on a different quality. She was a master’s student of Christine Streuli at the Berlin University of the Arts. Most recently, she received the Eberhard Roters Scholarship and the Bernhard Heiliger Prize for Sculpture.
