Heiner Müllers „Quartett“ meets Leoš Janáčeks späte Streichquartette – by NICO AND THE NAVIGATORS
The latest production by the music theater ensemble NICO AND THE NAVIGATORS, "Quartett zum Quadrat," which premieres at the Radialsystem in early December, combines Heiner Müller's famous play "Quartett" with two late string quartets by the Czech composer Leoš Janáček.
In "Quartett," Heiner Müller's adaptation of the 18th-century epistolary novel "Dangerous Liaisons" by Choderlos de Laclos, two voices collide, caught in the whirl of the sexes in a game of seduction, destruction, and power.
Since its creation in 1980, Müller's text has gained in power and relevance and now reads as a dark allegory of self-absorption and moral decay. Janáček's String Quartet No. 1, "Kreutzer Sonata," and No. 2, "Intimate Letters," expand the production with a musical commentary on Müller's literary composition. A hall of mirrors of Eros and the apocalypse emerges.
Two couples take center stage: the performers Annedore Kleist and Martin Clausen, two long-time ensemble members, and the dance duo Yui Kawaguchi and Martin Buczko.
The production will be accompanied musically by Paul Hübner on trumpet and Lorenzo Riessler on percussion in collaboration with the renowned Kuss Quartet.
The interpretation of Janáček's works permeates Müller's text, creating an expressive tension between language, sound, and movement.
