People’s Court for Climate Trials:

Who is responsible for the climate crisis – and how can we effectively demand justice? At the heart of the “On Planetary Justice” focus is the People's Court for Climate Trials. In this format, which lasts several hours, environmental plaintiffs from all over the world come together – from the Pacific Islands to Indonesia and Brazil to Switzerland.

They all took to the streets and then to court to sue governments or companies whose inadequate actions are exacerbating the climate crisis and violating fundamental rights or international obligations.Referencing the tradition of artistic tribunals, the “People’s Court for Climate Trials” deconstructs the performance of the courtroom and opens up a space between political assembly and participatory performance. HAU1 thus becomes a place of collective accusation, for the exchange of experiences and strategic networking for a planet worth living on. Here, concrete climate crimes and their consequences for particularly affected communities are discussed.

The focus is on the systematic inaction of states, the profit interests of fossil fuel companies at the expense of the environment, and human rights violations through climate-damaging projects. It is important to reflect on the achievements and challenges of these often lengthy processes: Who was included, who should have been more involved? And how can people act collectively and jointly despite our different levels of vulnerability to climate collapse?

Participants include Luisa Neubauer (first and second constitutional complaints in Germany), Clara Gonzalez (ECCHR, lawsuit by Pakistani flood victims), Rosmarie Wylder-Wältli and Oda Müller (climate seniors), Parid Ridwanuddin (Holcim lawsuit) and Germanwatch (RWE case, tbc). Abdul Mufeez Shaheed will report on the path to the ICJ advisory opinion, and Yi Yi Prue will report on Bangladesh's case against the German federal government. Miriam Saage-Maaß (ECCHR) and Edson Krenak will moderate the tribunal.
