Films of the Nazi Era
In his book *Patterns of Propaganda: Films of National Socialism* (2026), Rainer Rother examines four films from the period before the start of World War II: *Hitlerjunge Quex* (1933), *Triumph of the Will* (1935), *Der Herrscher* (1937), and *Urlaub auf Ehrenwort* (1938).
These films demonstrate how Nazi propaganda glorified the Führer state and the “people’s community,” reinterpreted history, and constructed enemy stereotypes. The author explains the context in which each film was made and analyzes the films’ messages as well as their narrative and aesthetic strategies. In doing so, he reveals mechanisms of manipulation that shaped not only the examples presented but Nazi propaganda as a whole.
