Old routes in the South-West

The route then follows the Schleusenweg to the Machnow lock on the Teltow Canal, which opened in 1906. From 1924 to 1961, a Berlin tram line ran to the Machnow lock, as commemorated by a tram carriage typical of that era. The route continues along the northern bank of the Teltow Canal to the former ‘Bravo’ checkpoint (Albrechts Teerofen), on to Dreilinden and along the route of the former Wannsee–Stahnsdorf cemetery railway. Until 1969, the A115 initially ran south of the city boundary, also through (West) Berlin territory. This old strip of land is still visible today.

Beyond Kohlhasenbrück, the walk follows the former ‘Transitweg’ to Steinstücken, a permanently inhabited former (West) Berlin exclave within the Potsdam municipal area. To round off the walk, you will visit the Steinstücken ‘airfield’, which was used by the American Allies between 1961 and 1972.
