Following the invasion of Ukraine, a new school subject was introduced across Russia in September 2022: every Monday, ‘patriotic performances’ were held for and with the pupils, based on a state-mandated curriculum, in order to justify the so-called ‘special military operation’. As proof of compliance with the regulations, the required video recordings had to be uploaded to a government portal.

The young teacher Pavel Talankin opposes the war in Ukraine and does not want to be part of the propaganda. However, he seizes the opportunity to discreetly film meetings, lessons and visitors at his school in the small Russian town of Karabash in the Urals. Via social media, he gets in touch with the US filmmaker David Borenstein, and they devise a joint plan for a documentary. When Talankin leaves Russia in 2024, he takes all the footage with him.

This resulted in the harrowing documentary *A Nobody Against Putin*, which won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film in March 2026. No film offers a closer look at the methods of indoctrination and manipulation used in Russia against children and young people than this one. Talankin now lives in exile; he fears for his life.

Following the film, there will be a post-screening discussion with the renowned British BBC journalist Lucy Ash, who reported from Russia for many years, on the situation in the country since the start of the war in Ukraine.
