Actor Dietmar Bär and musician Stefan Weinzierl will be performing Heinrich Böll's satire ‘Nicht nur zur Weihnachtszeit’ (Not Only at Christmas Time) at the Renaissance Theatre in Berlin on 15 December 2025.
‘In war, people sing, shoot, talk, fight, starve and die – and bombs are dropped – all unpleasant things that I don't want to bore my contemporaries with by mentioning.’
What if every evening were Christmas?
Christmas, the epitome of a contemplative celebration with the family, has become Aunt Milla's raison d'être. After being prevented from celebrating the holiday in detail for several years during the Second World War, her Christmas spirit increases monstrously after the end of the war, culminating in the angels still singing in August and the family coming over every evening to celebrate Christmas Eve.
In Nicht nur zur Weihnachtszeit (Not Only at Christmas Time, 1952), Heinrich Böll satirically targets the German post-war mentality and irrevocable Christmas routine. Wrapped up in a humorous narrative, he subtly criticises the inadequate reappraisal of the early post-war years.
Actor Dietmar Bär plays the witty narrator, while classical percussionist and sound artist Stefan Weinzierl plays typical and atypical Christmas melodies on unusual instruments.
